As the snow begins to melt, the temperature starts to warm, and the sun shines more days than not, it’s clear the spring season is upon us here in the mountains of Summit County. April and May tend to see many visitors pack up and head out as the ski resorts in the area begin to close. While most don’t consider traveling to the mountains during this time, locals will tell you it is the best time to visit! You’ll find the slopes less crowded, the temperatures lovely, and plenty of other activities to do through the area. Read on to learn more about some of our favorite area springtime mountain activities!

Skiing and Snowboarding – Several ski resorts in the area stay open well into the spring months. In fact, Summit County is home to the longest-running ski season in Colorado at Arapahoe Basin. Currently scheduled to close on June 1st, if the weather permits, the A-Basin will extend its season long past the estimated June date. A-Basin features 147 trails, 9 lifts, and 1,400 skiable acres, 125 of which are snowmaking acres. This peak is largely geared towards more advanced-level skiers but does offer a few easy slopes for beginners as well. Visit the Arapahoe Basin website to learn more about the mountain.

Visit a Marina – Spend a crisp spring day on a boat ride through one of the breathtaking marinas of Summit County. Dillon Marina begins their boat rentals on April 1st and boasts of being the world’s highest deep-water marina. Take a boat tour or try out sailing school and enjoy the temperate weather on the water. If you’re visiting later in the season, check out the Frisco Bay Marina which opens for boat rentals on May 27th. Check out their long list of available water sports including canoeing, paddle boarding, fishing, and kayaking.

Fishing – Fishing is a great activity for any season in Colorado but is especially enjoyable in the cool spring weather. Rainbow Trout and Cutthroat Trout are the best catches during the April and May months as the warming weather and abundance of food jumpstart active feeding in the area rivers. Breckenridge Outfitters is your one-stop shop for all things fishing in the Breckenridge area. They offer a variety of tours for all sizes of groups and make fishing in the Colorado mountains a breeze.

Discover Main Street – If you’ve visited Main Street, Breckenridge during the primetime dates through ski season or summer, you’ve maybe walked away thinking the crowds were a bit too much. This is why visiting Main Street during the spring season is the best time to enjoy your favorite restaurants and shops! While a few spots may have more limited hours during the spring, you’ll be able to easily check out all the best places without the stress of dealing with large crowds. Visit GoBreck’s guide to Adventure on Main Street to learn more about all there is to discover in downtown Breckenridge.

Whitewater Rafting – If you’re in the mood for something more thrilling, consider booking a whitewater rafting tour. May is one of the best months for rafting as the snow begins to melt and the rapids pick up the pace. While there is no rafting available directly in Breckenridge, it is a fantastic central hub to easily get to one of several rafting areas located nearby. We recommend checking out the tours with Breckenridge Whitewater, they will custom-fit the right rafting tour just for you!

Fat BikingFat biking is relatively new to the region, but don’t mistake it for your traditional bike ride down the street. With tires twice the width of normal mountain bikes you can really test your riding skills on off-road trails in the area. Navigating the snow-covered trails of Summit County is a breeze on a fat bike! For guided tours, visit Breckenridge Bike Tours. They offer various tours year-round, including electric bike tours and a beer and distillery tour. Their guided tours are a great way to see the historic and stunning Breckenridge and Blue River areas.
