While most visitors to Summit County are holding off until the slopes are covered in that fluffy white stuff, autumn is actually one of the best times to visit! The crowds are low, the air is crisp and the changing leaves turn the mountains into gold. Take a drive, explore on foot, or simply take it all in al fresco at one of the many outdoor dining options.

Colorado and Summit County has many scenic drives and gorgeous views but for a trip that is sure to impress, we suggest Boreas Pass in Breckenridge. The gravel road is passable in any passenger vehicle and is only 6.6 miles one way. Used as a narrow-gauge railroad in the late 1800s to early 1900s between Breckenridge and Como, Boreas Pass offers panoramic views as well as tight groves of Aspens, giving drivers and cyclists that tunnel-feel before reaching treeline and offering incredible views in all directions. Be sure to bring the camera to capture stunning views of the Blue River Valley, the Ten Mile Range and Breckenridge Ski Resort.

For those looking to explore the mountains on foot, multiple trails offer the up-close experience. Salt Lick Trail is a great, 4-mile beginner hike that offers beautiful scenery at every turn. Golden aspen leaves create a beautiful canopy as well as carpet the forest floor and you’ll pass beaver ponds and meadows – likely areas for wildlife.

Ptarmigan Trail is a must do for the whole family to enjoy. An invigorating walk that offers excellent views of the Gore Range, Buffalo Mountain, Red Peak, Willow Peak, Red Buffalo Pass, the Ten Mile Range over Breckenridge and Lake Dillon. If you want panoramic views of Summit County, this is the place to go!

Eaglesmere Lakes is a local favorite. Totaling 6.8 miles round trip, the first part of the hike is backed by the soundtrack of Cataract Falls plunging into Lower Cataract Lake. The abundant aspen groves on this trail make for a picturesque hike.

If you’re looking to stay in town or just satisfying your hunger after a long hike, Frisco Fall Fest offers an art exhibit and sale, live music, and a beer and margarita garden as well as Flavors of Frisco where local restaurants will serve small plate samples of signature dishes. Explore the rest of the Frisco area by taking a short walk to Frisco Bay Marina as well as local shops and eateries.

Come see what makes fall in Summit County so irresistible!
